If you asked me, ‘What is The Steam Bar?’ … in a nutshell, it’s a premium hair brand that meets a private members club for people with curly, coily and afro-textured hair. Why? Well, The Steam Bar is an elevated hair experience you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a space where digital culture meets culture and an opulently inclusive environment that places products, formulations and experiences first; plus, it has been needed for generations. The Steam Bar is a space where our crowns can rest and flourish, and it’s a thriving community that leaves negative stigmas, barriers and programming at the door.
Like many with natural and textured hair, I have had my own evolving hair and scalp journey, and I also emphasised haircare and styling over scalp care. I had experimented with several hairstyles, from relaxers and wigs to weaves and extensions – believe me, there wasn’t a style you could have mentioned that I hadn’t tried – however, I knew that I was trying to achieve the unattainable beauty ideal that is often placed on us, not noting the trauma it was causing to what lies beneath. It wasn’t until I was older that I not only noticed the receding hairline, traction alopecia, and unhealthy environment my scalp faced (even with the protective hairstyles), but I remembered how fond I was of my Sunday afternoon hot oil steam treatments as a child and how healthy my hair was then. I needed to change my approach and honour my crown.
However, my search found insufficient premium products, spaces and sub-par product formulations filled with heavy waxes, pore-clogging greases, and unrefined butters. I also found out I wasn’t the only one searching for change. I was conversing with friends and confidants who, too, felt there was nothing highly regarded on the market for them and their loved ones. Therefore, layering my personal scalp and hair challenges, my love for hair steaming and the concrete fact that our community had been underserved for too long, the concept of The Steam Bar was born.
The Steam Bar changes the narrative and breaks the cycle that has become customary in haircare for years. Our trichologist-approved approach is ‘The Art of Steaming and Skinification’. We pair hair steaming (which uses moist heat to purify and moisturise your hair and scalp) with hair skinification. In case you’re not already familiar with the term. ‘Skinification’ is when more active skincare ingredients are formulated within haircare products to improve hair and scalp health with visible and exquisite results. The pairing makes sense, and it’s a tried, trusted and proven approach because creating a healthy scalp environment will do wonders for our hair overall.
More importantly, we wanted to create a space of feeling where our community can pause and appreciate who they are and know that they are seen, deserve and belong.
