When it comes to supporting and maintaining healthy hair growth, there’s one beauty ritual that is often overlooked but is proven to have a myriad of benefits; so transformative can it be that we created our entire brand around it. And that ritual is steaming.
In creating The Steam Bar we had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading Trichologists and Formulators to better learn and understand the profound benefits that steaming can offer. Here are our cliff notes.
Deep Hydration
One of the main benefits provided by steaming is deep hydration. The steam opens up the hair cuticles, allowing moisture to penetrate the hair shaft more effectively. This is especially beneficial for us with hair that tends to be on the dry side as it helps to restore moisture balance, making hair softer.
Improved Flexibility.
Steaming regularly can improve the flexibility and strength of our hair as when hair is hydrated it is less likely to break or form splint ends.
Enhanced Hair Growth
Steaming stimulates blood flow to the scalp, which can promote healthier hair growth. The increased circulation ensures that hair follicles receive more oxygen and nutrients, which are essential for the growth of strong, healthy hair. Additionally, the warm steam can help to unclog hair follicles (particularly of benefit for those that use a lot of product on their hair), allowing new hair to grow more easily.
Better Absorption of Hair Products
When the hair cuticles are open, hair care products can penetrate more deeply because what’s the point of investing in well formulated products that don’t get the chance to do their job, right? Steaming can enhance the effectiveness of conditioners, masks, and other treatments. By allowing these products to reach the inner layers of the hair.
Scalp Health
Steaming is not just beneficial for the hair, but also for the scalp which needs as much care as your hair does. Steam helps to soften and remove buildup of dead skin cells, oil, and product residues. A clean, healthy scalp is crucial for hair growth and can prevent issues such as dandruff and itchiness.
Enhanced Curl Definition
For those with afro, curly or wavy hair, steaming can help to enhance curl definition as the added moisture from the steam can revive curl patterns.
Relaxation and Stress Relief
And last but not least, think of your steam session as a spa moment as it’s one of the most relaxing things we can do for our hair and mind.
The Steam Bar guide to at home steaming:
- Prepare your hair Start with a clean base, ensuring your hair and scalp has been thoroughly washed to remove any build-up.
- Apply your treatment Treatment: apply your treatment mask from root to tip by gently massaging it in and combing it through for even saturation across your strands.
- Steam your hair - our microwavable steaming cap heats up in as little as 60 seconds and emits a safe and therapeutic heat on the head, creating a steam environment that activates the nourishing and healing ingredients found within our scalp mask. Your steam session which ideally should never be no longer than 30 minutes max as excessive steaming can lead to a hygral fatigue; a condition where the cuticle receives too much hydration leading to damage to the hair follicle.
- Rinse - Once your steam session is complete, rinse your hair with cool water to close the cuticles and style as needed.
Think of your steam like a facial for your scalp and hair; a moment in time for you to slow down, be at ease and honour your crown in a gentle yet therapeutic way.
